Dr Matt Walley, PhD.Twenty-two years building the system that became Inception Nutrition.
PhD in applied research methodology, University of Canterbury. Founder of Inception Group. Refined across 1,380+ client outcomes and twenty-two years of applied practice.

I am the founder of Inception Group. I hold a PhD from the University of Canterbury. I have worked with over 1,380 nutrition clients across twenty-two years. I run a high-performance gym, an in-house supplement company, a martial arts academy, and a clinical aesthetics business. Inception Nutrition is the part of that ecosystem dedicated to one thing: changing your body composition, your bloodwork, and your performance with a system that adjusts as your body responds.
The system did not start as a system. It became one across twenty-two years of coaching.
The PhD work at the University of Canterbury sat inside applied research methodology. Structural equation modelling, behavioural research methods, the careful business of working out which variables actually drive an outcome and which ones just correlate with it. That training is the spine of how I think about a client even now. Most nutrition advice you encounter has not been put through that kind of filter. Mine has.
Years of practice across performance, training, and nutrition taught me, in detail, that the gap between knowing the science and getting a real human to change is enormous. The science is the easy part. Behaviour is the hard part. Most coaches are still pretending that handing someone a meal plan is sufficient. It is not.
I founded Inception Group because the nutrition coaching I wanted to run could not exist as a stand-alone service. It needed a gym so we could see clients training. It needed a supplement company so the protocols I wrote could actually be delivered, not approximated by whatever someone could find online. It needed clinical aesthetics next door, because body composition change at scale runs into questions that are honest about the body and not just the marketing version of it. The integration is the point.
The body composition scanning workflow came out of a frustration with the scale. People were doing the right things, lifting muscle, dropping visceral fat, sleeping better, and the scale was telling them they were failing. So we built a workflow around scans. Weekly check-ins. Monthly rescans. The numbers that actually predict health, not the number that just predicts gravity.
Inception Labs followed because we kept hitting the same wall: a client needed a specific dose of a specific compound at a specific quality, and the off-the-shelf product was either wrong or expensive or both. Formulating in-house meant the protocol and the product could finally live in the same conversation.
The intelligence layer, the AI-led reporting that generates each client's personalised plan, was the last piece. It came out of work I do separately as co-founder of Substrate. The system reads your scan, your food log, your training history, your lifestyle, and your bloodwork where you have it, then reasons across all of it. The human coach overlays judgement. That is the model. It is not a replacement for me. It is leverage.
Real qualifications.Real businesses behind them.
PhD, University of Canterbury.
Cognitive psychology and management. Research methodology training underpins how the practice operates: evidence over fashion, structured analysis over intuition.
Twenty-two years of practical coaching.
Over 1,380 nutrition clients across twenty-two years. The system was built in the room, with people, not in a lecture theatre.
Co-founder, Substrate.
An applied AI consultancy. The technical depth that powers the report generation system sits inside this work.
Founder, Inception Group.
Inception Gym and Inception Labs sit alongside the nutrition practice. An ecosystem built so the coaching can sit alongside training and supplementation, not next to a chatbot.
Research methodology training shapes how the practice operates from the ground up. We follow evidence over fashion, build interventions on causal models rather than population averages, and treat behaviour change as the research field it actually is.
You work with me directly. The wider Inception Group sits behind every programme.
Coaching is led personally by Dr Matt Walley. The Inception Group ecosystem of gym, supplement company, martial arts academy, and clinical aesthetics partner sits underneath, so a client who needs training, supplementation, recovery, or aesthetics support can access it in the same building, on the same week, inside the same system.
A short manifesto.Six beliefs that shape every programme I write.
Most nutrition advice fails because it is built on averages. Your body is not an average.
Supplements are amplifiers, not substitutes. The system underneath them is what does the work.
Body composition tells you more in twelve weeks than weight on a scale tells you in twelve months.
Behaviour change is a research field. Most coaches do not read it.
Working alongside your GP is the right model. Replacing them is not.
Results are measurable. If they are not, the programme is not working.
