Nutritionist vs Dietitian in Christchurch
Both work with food and health. They are not the same profession. The difference matters when you are choosing who to work with — particularly if your situation involves clinical conditions or medication. Plain-English comparison, no marketing spin.

Registered Dietitian
If your situation has a clinical dimension — diagnosed condition, prescribed medication where nutrition needs to be coordinated with the medical management, eating disorder history, paediatric needs, kidney/liver/cardiac concerns — start with a registered dietitian. They are the right scope of practice. Your GP can refer you, and ACC or insurance pathways may apply.
Nutritionist / Nutrition Coach
If your goal is body composition change, performance improvement, or sustained lifestyle nutrition without a specific clinical diagnosis driving the work, a nutrition coach with strong credentials and a body-composition-led methodology is generally the better fit. The work is daily and applied rather than clinical, and the coaching relationship is structured for adherence rather than diagnosis.
One framing, no spin.
These are not competing professions. They are different scopes of practice. Inception Nutrition is a nutrition coaching service led by Dr Matt Walley, PhD. We are not registered dietitians and do not work in clinical scope. We refer to GPs and dietitians where the situation calls for it, and we run the body composition coaching programme alongside. If you are unsure which fits, the Free Metabolic Audit is a sensible first read — and we will tell you honestly if a dietitian is the right starting point instead.
