Pic's Peanut Butter: Health Factor Profile and How to Eat It Well

Pic's, made in Nelson from peanuts and salt only, is the cleanest mainstream peanut butter on the New Zealand shelf. No added sugar, no palm oil, no emulsifiers, just real peanuts and a useful fat and protein profile. The catch is calorie density, this is a 600 kcal per 100g food and respect for portion is the entire game.

What it actually does

Pic's delivers 51g of fat, 27g of protein, and 6g of fibre per 100g. The fat profile is roughly half monounsaturated, a third polyunsaturated, and the rest saturated, which sits well within the cardiometabolic guidelines we follow.

The absence of added sugar and palm oil matters. Most international peanut butter brands, and many NZ private-label versions, contain 5 to 10 percent added sugar, which moves the food from a fat anchor into a confectionary register. Pic's is just peanuts and salt.

It also delivers modest doses of magnesium, vitamin E, and niacin, plus the flavour density that makes adherence easier on a structured plan.

How to eat it for the best response

Measure it. A single tablespoon is roughly 16g and 95 kcal, easy to underestimate by a factor of three when eating from the jar. Use a kitchen scale for the first two weeks until your eye calibrates.

Pair with a slow carb and protein source. A slice of Vogel's with two teaspoons of Pic's, banana, and Greek yoghurt is a near-perfect breakfast for satiety and glucose stability. Pic's on apple or celery covers the snack slot without breaking calorie targets.

Avoid using it as a sweet treat substitute. Eating peanut butter from the spoon in the evening is the most common reversible cause of fat-loss stalls in our coached clients.

Where it fits in an Inception programme

Pic's is on most Functional Nutrition plans, prescribed at 15 to 30g per day depending on calorie target. It suits clients who train hard, need calorie-dense convenience, and respond well to a higher-fat dietary pattern.

It is the wrong fit for clients in aggressive fat-loss phases below 1700 kcal, where almond butter at lower portion sizes often works better. It also needs careful handling for clients with confirmed FODMAP sensitivity, where small doses of 10g or less are the upper limit.

For Longevity Programme members, we rotate Pic's with extra virgin olive oil, avocado, and tinned sardines as the daily fat sources, never relying on a single food.
